This album documents the voyage taken by Governor Alfred P. Swineford aboard the U.S.S. Thetis during the summer of 1888. The collection includes many images of Alaskan Natives from the villages visited, including Arlinga, the interpreter for Gov. Swineford and the schooner, Jane Grey.

The Thetis, a three-masted, wooden-hulled steamer built in Scotland, was acquired by the U.S. Navy in 1884 to search for Lt. Adolphus W. Greely's polar exploration party. The Thetis made several trips to Alaska. In May, 1888, Gov. Alfred P. Swineford was one of the distinguished guests invited to accompany a voyage to the outlying ports of the Territory. Alfred P. Swineford was born at Ashland, Wisconsin, September 14, 1834. In 1871he was elected to the lower house of the Michigan Legislature. He served two terms as mayor of Marquette and afterwards was elected to several terms as alderman and supervisor. In 1885 he was appointed by President Cleveland to be Governor of the District of Alaska and held that office until 1889.
